Nima highway shooting victim in critical condition

A forex bureau operator is in a critical condition at the Police Hospital in Accra after some unidentified assailants shot him at close range while he was on his way home on the Nima-Kanda highway Monday night.

The victim, identified as Mohammed Abdul Awudu Kadri, 39, was shot in the chest and on both thighs whilst he was driving home.

The police told Graphic Online they suspect the unidentified assailants trailed the victim from his forex bureau at Ridge in Accra and shot him at a spot on the Nima-Kanda Highway near the Community Library.

According to an eyewitness, the victim was using a Toyota Corolla vehicle and had been held in bumper-to-bumper traffic on the highway at about 7:30pm when the assailants arrived on two unregistered motorbikes with their helmets hiding their faces and shot at the victim through the glass.

They reportedly pulled him out and fired at him multiple times before fleeing the scene.

The unidentified assailants who were said be riding two unregistered motorbikes covered their faces with their helmets.

The incident happened at about 7:30pm and some eyewitnesses intervened and called the Police Control Room.

The Police Patrol team from the Kotobabi District responded to the distress call and arrived at the scene shortly after.

The victim was taken to the Police Hospital where he has been responding to treatment.

The victim’s vehicle was towed to the Nima Motor Transport and Traffic Department (MTTD) where the police have recorded the incident as a case of an attempted murder, Graphic Online understands.

Police sources, however, could not immediately confirm to Graphic Online if the victim was robbed of any possession.

A friend of the victim, Alhaji Isaaka Nettey who arrived at the scene a few minutes after Awudu had been shot told Graphic Online that he had closed from work and was on his way home from Tema when he saw a crowd on the Nima-Kanda Highway, a few meters away from the main traffic light and decided to park his car and find out what was happening.

He said when he got closer, he found out that it was his senior high school mate, Awudu, who had been shot and when the police took him to the hospital he followed up.

He was happy his friend was alive and hoped the assailants would be arrested.

As of 10 am Tuesday [October 8, 2019], some of the pellets had been removed from the wounds sustained by the victim and he was being prepared for the theatre for surgery.
